Most Affordable Community Colleges

According to Smart 2017, the average student debt stands at $27,300, which represents a 24% increase from 10 years ago. The average cost of tuition for California community college students is $1,429. Student loan default rates have been on the rise, with California’s at 12.7%.

According to the US Department of Education, College Affordability and Transparency Center, the following are the most affordable community colleges in California.

College of the Siskiyous

College of the Siskiyous is located on one of the most beautiful community college campuses in California.  The college is recognized for its excellent programs in the humanities and arts, science and technology as well as athletics. The college hosts 2,060 students.

College of Siskiyou’s tuition is $1,104 per year for in-state residents. This amount is 68% cheaper than the national community college two-year tuition average of 3,443. The tuition is also 77% cheaper than the average California tuition of $4,852 for two-year colleges. Out of state students are charged $6,192, (less than the state average of $6,797 and has remained the same for the last four years. 78% of Siskiyou students receive financial aid. The median debt for graduates is $12,405.

Saddleback College

Saddleback College is one of the premier community colleges in California, located a few miles away from sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Saddleback College is known for its high tech learning centers and laboratories, exceptional student support services and one of the best transfer rates to prestigious universities like the University of California, Irvine, Berkeley and Los Angeles.  Saddleback College hosts 20,007 students.

Tuition is $1,280 per year for in-state students (63% cheaper than the national average tuition for two-year community colleges). The tuition is also 73% cheaper than the average California tuition of $4,852 for two-year colleges. Out of state students pay $7,782. Students taking out loans at Saddleback College represent 2% of the population, with 44% of the students receiving financial aid.

Cañada College

Cañada College is one of the smallest community colleges in the San Francisco Bay area. The college hosts more than 20,000 students from 160 different countries.  The college is famous for its ‘College for Working Adults. The program is designed to accommodate working adults in achieving an affordable degree. The program offers up to 60 credits that are fully transferable to public and private schools. The program costs approximately $400 a semester.  This amount is 63% cheaper than the national average for public two-year college’s tuition of $3,443. Tuition in Cañada College does not vary by in or out of state residence status.

City College of San Francisco

Located in San Francisco, City College of San Francisco is among the best two-year community college options. The university hosts 23,836 students and was the first to offer training for women in aircraft mechanics as well as the first to offer a women’s studies programs in the country.

San Francisco is the first city in the US to make college available for all residents, regardless of income.  San Francisco approved a transfer tax on properties worth more than $5 million to fund an education program that allows all the residents to attend the City College of San Francisco tuition-free.  As a result, City College of San Francisco tuition is free as of Monday, Feb 7, 2017 for students who have lived in San Francisco for at least one year.  The out of state tuition is $7,412
