California Colleges With the Most Scholarships Awarded to Student Athletes

With grueling practice schedules and regular games that compromise the life of a student-athlete, figuring out how to pay for school is the last thing a student athlete needs to worry about. 

The issue is even more serious for a student-athlete who wants to avoid student debt. Since working your way through college while playing sports is a huge challenge, athletic scholarships come in handy.  The most common student-athlete scholarships are awarded to players directly from colleges and universities.  The scholarship may cover all or part of tuition and may even include a stipend, since being a student-athlete is often a full-time job.  The following schools are among the colleges in California that are renowned for their athletic scholarships offered in various athletic teams who participate in the NCAA.

University of Southern California

The University of Southern California aims to recruit student-athletes who compete at a championship level as well as perform successfully in the classroom.  An essential part of that equation involves University of Southern California’s financial commitment to fund and support each team.   Athletic scholarship costs make up a significant portion of the University of Southern California’s expenses. USC spends an astonishing $18 million, each year on athlete scholarship.  The University of Southern California offers four-year athletic scholarships to a variety of sports, including: football, men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball.

Stanford University

Stanford University promotes excellence in both academics and athletics, and it is unparalleled in its success.  Stanford University is considered one of the most dominant athletic programs in the nation.  California College Bound has determined that Stanford University awards 500 athletic scholarships each year.  To be eligible for an athletic scholarship at Stanford University, student-athletes must meet NCAA academic requirement and maintain satisfactory progress.  In other words, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 units at all times and meet a specific grade point average.

Azusa Pacific University

Azusa Pacific University is hailed as one of the top evangelical Christian schools in the nation.  The school lies in SoCal’s Scenic San Gabriel Valley.   Azusa Pacific University was affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1965 and adopted a secondary association with the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in 1969.  Since the 1950’s, Azusa Pacific University’s seven sports programs have grown to 19 nationally recognized men’s and women’s athletic programs.

Santa Clara University

Santa Clara University is a comprehensive Jesuit, Catholic University based in Silicon Valley.  The university offers a rigorous academic program and an impressive athletic program.  Athletic scholarships at Santa Clara University are awarded through the Bronco Bench Foundation and have scholarships available for the 23 different athletic teams on campus.

Participating in a sport at a high level of competition takes dedication. Athletes are rewarded for their hard work through athletic scholarships at the university level.
