Best Community Colleges in California

Community colleges are public institutions of higher learning that award associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas in two-years. Most students attend community colleges as a way of saving money and avoiding student debt, which is often associated with four-year institutions.

De Anza College

Founded in 1967, De Anza College is set on 112 acres in Cupertino, California. The community college offers 66 degrees and 85 certificate programs. With a student body of 21,500, De Anza College has a first-year retention rate of 90.7% as well as a graduation transfer rate of 72.7%. The top five University of California system schools that De Anza College alumni transfer to include: UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Los Angeles. The top five California State University system schools that are preferred by De Anza College alumni include CSU: Monterey Bay, Sacramento, and San Jose.

De Anza College has 19 athletic teams, which include men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams. The school’s sports facilities include an Olympics aquatics complex, a college stadium,  and track and field facilities for athletics. Santa Barbara City College is located upon a bluff of 74 acres. The college offers 50 certificate programs and 80 degrees and has a current student enrollment of 30,687 students. 57% of students transfer to four-year colleges.  Santa Barbara City College has agreements with 76 universities in and out of California where its credits are accepted. Santa Barbara City College runs a Transfer Achievement program to assist its students in making informed choices on their transition from their college to four-year universities.

Santa Barbara City College was awarded the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence in 2013 by the Aspen Institute. The college was also ranked position 23 best community college in the country.

The college offers programs in cancer information management, marine diving technology, automotive and so many more. It is the only community college degree program in the nation accredited by the International Diving Schools Association, the Association of Commercial Diving Educators and the National Association of Underwater Instructors.

Las Positas College

Las Positas College is located in the city of Livermore, near San Francisco Bay. Set on 147 acres, Las Positas College is home to 9,300 students. The college offers 17 transfer degree programs, 24 occupational associate degrees, and 44 certificate programs. The most popular majors include fire science technology, early childhood education, business, liberal arts, and sciences.  Las Positas College has transfer agreements with over 30 universities and colleges across the nation and has a student transfer rate of 65%. The college has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
